Original story (from Feb 12) follows:
Smartphones need Widevine L1 certification in order to stream HD content from platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime, just to name but a few.
For some reason, not every smartphone comes with this certification out of the box and usually needs a software update to enable HD streaming. One such phone is the Redmi Note 8 Pro that launched last year.
On paper, the Note 8 Pro is a great piece of hardware capable of just about anything apart from streaming Netflix HD content. That’s a bummer if you ask me, but towards the end of last year, the company promised to address the issue with the update to Android 10.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro picked up its stable update to Android 10 a month ago, but this was limited to the Chinese variant. It’s still unknown when the global rollout will begin, but going by the latest developments, the Redmi Note 8 Pro Android 10 update may arrive in mid-March 2020.
As noted, Xiaomi promised that the Redmi Note 8 Pro Widevine L1 certification will be part of the update to Android 10. Now, according to support, the device will get Widevine L1 support in mid-March, which essentially means the OS will also be released next month.
Netflix will support HD mode, probably in the next OTA upgrade in mid-March.
The above is an alleged conversation between support and an owner of the device, who is promised that Redmi Note 8 Pro Widevine L1 certification is likely to be part of the next OTA upgrade.
Again, this also means that the next update the Note 8 Pro picks up will likely bring Android 10 OS. And this should get you excited, if not already. We will let you know when the update arrives.
