New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on January 8, 2020) follows:
Allow me to start this article with a trivia. Do you know that Poco F1 is a distant cousin of Mi 8? Matter of fact, both Mi MIX 2S and Mi MIX 3 are part of the same family as well, as these phones share a common kernel source.
Sounds too much nerdy? Well, every one of this group is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC.
Matter of fact, a recent change to the kernel source also indicated that Xiaomi was cooking Android 10 for these phones. Mi MIX 3 even secured the update at the end of December via MIUI stable channel.
Being a Chinese OEM, Xiaomi does prefer to roll-out such major OTA updates in their home ground first, and Mi 8 is not an exception. The flagship from 2018 received the stable Android 10-based MIUI 11 update in China after a brief beta testing phase.
Guess what? The update is now available on the global units as well!
As you can see, Xiaomi came up with a botched up numbering scheme – just like the situation with Redmi K20/Mi 9T. The Pie-based MIUI 11 stable update for Mi 8 was tagged as V11.0.6.0, so technically this new build (V11.0.1.0) is downgrading the MIUI layer. ?
Nevertheless, the security patch level is now bumped from October to December (2019). The complete changelog is follows:
System
– Stable MIUI based on Android 10
– Updated Android Security Patch to December 2019
– Increased system securityLockscreen, status bar, Notification shade
– Fix: Couldn’t open notification settings in the Notification shade in Second space
Security
– Optimization: Localized payment security icon for India
Other
– Fix: Images overlapped in scrolling screenshots
Thanks to our collaboration with yshalsager and the Xiaomi Firmware Updater project, we have our hands on the update package.

This is a gradual rollout. Thus Xiaomi needs to verify the MIUI account designation and allow the update only if the account is whitelisted for early beta testing. However, you can bypass the check by flashing through TWRP.
The build is not given green light for broader rollout yet, but it would be the same exact binary (unless there is a major showstopper bug) which is going to be released a few days later.
Update (January 22, 2020)
The initial Android 10 build for Mi 8 has been cancelled due to bugs. Xiaomi is now rolling out a new update (MIUI V11.0.3.0.QEAMIXM) with January 2020 patch. Details here.
