Surprise! Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e & Galaxy A50 getting January 2020 security update

Samsung has a pretty elaborate portfolio of devices, all across the spectrum. From the entry-level phones, across the mid-range segment to the flagship and even the ultra-premium ones like the Note series and the pioneering Galaxy Fold.

Keeping all these devices updated with the very latest monthly security patch can be a huge task. However, Samsung nowadays is absolutely dominating in this area. Recall that the December patch was available on Galaxy A50 long before Google’s own Pixel lineup.

Keeping with the same pace, Samsung is already rolling out the January 2020 security patch update to the Galaxy A50 units in Russia.

The update bears ASL6 tag as software version and is available for the SM-A505FN variant of Galaxy A50. We still don’t have the official changelog for this build (which is still based on Android Pie) so it is impossible to decipher if the update comes with any bug fixes or feature enhancements.

Galaxy Tab S5e is also getting the January 2020 patch by Samsung. The build is available in several Latin American countries, like Uruguay & Panama.

As at the time of writing, the update that carries the software version ASL2 had not been reflected in Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e’s official software tracker. As such, we still don’t have the official update changelog.

Unofficial update trackers like Samfrew has listed the update though, and one can use tools like Frija to download the firmware package and update manually.

These are the first devices to receive the January 2020 security patch update (not consideting Galaxy S9 due to beta testing) and as such, it might take a while before the same is available to your Galaxy A50 or Galaxy Tab S5e. These updates will also take time to hit various other regions.
