Cost effective $150 Huawei 5G phone on cards in 2020 or early 2021

5G, the next generation in mobile connectivity is, for the most part, still in its infancy. In early 2020, only a few markets in the first-world countries have been able to roll it out on any meaningful scale.

5G phones are also a novelty at this point. The only available mainstream phones that support 5G often cost upwards of $1000. However, as 5G rolls out in more markets, this is expected to change.

We should soon see mid-range devices, and eventually, budget devices that support 5G. Huawei has seen the potential opportunity and is gearing up to produce entry-level 5G enabled devices.

According to recent reports, Huawei is planning to produce a 5G device that costs around $150, by the end of the year. The information came from Yang Chaoying, president of Huawei’s 5G product line. This is in line with the company’s views on budget 5G phones.

It is worth noting that in 2019, Huawei beat its Korean arch-rival, Samsung in the number of 5G devices sold across the globe.

At the moment, there are a good number of chips in the market that support 5G. These include chips from Samsung, Qualcomm and even Huawei’s Kirin 990. These are the high-end chips. On the other side of the spectrum, there are also a few options.

The MediaTek 1000L and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G chipsets with optional 5G modem integration are just a few of the chips that should allow 5G connectivity on a number of midranges. As the year chugs on, we are bound to see more 5G-ready chips for even more segments in the market.

At the moment, the Redmi K30 5G is the cheapest 5G smartphone in the market. This device carries a price tag of approximately US$290. It will be interesting to see the kind of 5G phones outside the premium market segment that will come out this year.
