5G phones' price to come down in a year or two, says Huawei exec

The year 2019 can be touted as the year for innovative smartphones. There were quite a few features that were brought up last year. Firstly, the all-screen design, then the motorized pop-up camera became a thing.

Then came in the foldable phones from Samsung and Huawei. So, all in all, smartphone OEMs have tried to bring in something new and out of the box to their smartphones.

In fact, there were quite a few smartphones back in 2019 that came with 5G support. And following the same trend, 2020 can be the year of  5G powered smartphones, especially flagships. 

According to a recent report, smartphone manufacturers are working towards bringing down the cost of 5G smartphones, thanks to the low priced chipsets from Qualcomm and even MediaTek. 

Huawei’s President for 5G product line, Yang Chaobin has stated that the price of the 5G smartphones could be priced around $150 probably by the end of 2020 or early 2021. 

Chaobin also commented that the whole meaning of communication technology is to improve customer experience and bring down the user costs. 

Notably, Huawei also launched a number of 5G smartphones in 2019 like Huawei Mate 30 5G series, Mate 20X 5G, Mate X 5G, Nova 6 5G, etc. 

In fact, Huawei shipped over 6.9 million 5G smartphones. Moreover, according to a Chinese research agency, approximately 5 million 5G smartphones were sold in the month of December 2019, and it is expected to grow further in 2020.

Also, point to note is that though the 5G smartphones have been sold in a huge number, the majority of the phones were sold in China by OEMs like Xiaomi, Huawei, and Vivo.

The main reason behind it is because 5G services have already gone commercial in China by Chinese network operators. Apart from China, South Korea, and the US are two countries that have 5G commercial services.

Besides, it is expected that the 5G services are likely going to be started in one of the most important smartphone markets in the world, i.e. India.

And if all things go according to the plan then, the sale of 5G smartphones will pick up and we could see a lot of low priced 5G smartphones in the smartphone market.
