New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on March 18, 2020) follows:
Nothing can be frustrating for a smartphone user if although being eligible for a major OS update, the device is devoid of getting one. And this scenario is apt for the Honor Play users that have been left out from the list of Honor devices that will get Android 10.
Honor Play was launched back in 2018, and it came with some decent specs along with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. The device has already received one major OS upgrade in the form of Android 9 Pie, and that’s where it is currently stuck at.
The frustration seems legit as, Honor Play has the same Kirin 970 chipset found in the Huawei P20, P20 Pro, Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, Honor 10 and even the Honor View 10. Matter of fact, lower-specd Honor 8X has got the EMUI 10 (Android 10).
Several users took to Change.org to sign petitions to make the EMUI 10 (Android 10) update available for the Honor Play after it came out that Android 10 update is off the cards for the device. Taking a look at the current petition numbers, one of the petition is at 7,826 while the other counts at 3,716.
Seeing the growth in the number of frustrated customers, Huawei came up with a weird solution to calm them down. Chinese OEM started offering disappointed Honor Play users an Amazon Voucher worth INR 500 ($7).
Honor Play users, via petitions, not only demanded to update the handset with EMUI 10 but also gave an option to unlock the bootloader for allowing custom ROM installation and other modding-related stuff.
But this also went down in vain as the company has denied the request to give bootloader unlock access stating that it is done for the benefit of the user and to avoid the damage that can be caused to the smartphone while unlocking the bootloader.
Amidst all of this, although Honor Play users cannot get their hands-on the EMUI 10, they have at least something to cheer about as per the latest development, the VoWiFi (WiFi calling) feature will arrive with March patch for the units.
Users of Honor Play were waiting for this feature to make way with the February 2020 patch, but they were again treated with disappointment. But, it seems like Huawei has this feature lined-up with a new security update. Notably, Honor 8X will also get the VoWiFi feature with the February update.
Below is a summary of the changes to be included in the Honor Play VoWiFi calling update:
[Call]
– Enables the VoWiFi features for a better voice and video call experience with certain carriers.
[Security]
– Integrates Android security patches released in March 2020 for improved system security.
Readers should note that this update is not yet available for the device, but can be expected to hit the units later this month or the beginning of April. We will keep our eye and keep you updated once the update is out for the Honor Play units.
