Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime from 2016 bags December security patch

Android as a platform has come a long way. Gone are the days when Android-powered devices that were a year old stopped getting new updates. Today, devices that are up to 2 years old can still enjoy regular security patches.

One such device is the Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime from back in 2016.

In a surprise move, the device that is well over 3 years old at this point, is getting the December 2019 security patch update. The update which bears software version CSL1 weighs in at 325.53 MB.

The update’s changelog is the generic one we have seen with many other monthly security patches:

The security of your device has been improved.

This latest update comes with the title “Last Update Information.” While not immediately clear what this means, we can only guess that this is going to be the final update to roll out to the Galaxy J5 Prime 2016.

This is especially bearing in mind that Samsung devices receive two major updates, and an extra year of just security updates, making for three years of support in total.

Samsung has really turned over a new leaf in the recent past. The Android phone maker that was once the laughing stock of the industry in terms of updates, is today one of the market leaders.

Samsung frequently pushes out monthly security updates to many of its devices well ahead of the likes of Google and OnePlus.

We can only hope that Samsung keeps at it and helps steer the Android ecosystem to greater security and efficiency through these frequent updates.
