Asus ZenFone 6 CTS test failure & Google Pay issues likely due to regional firmware mismatch

Asus ZenFone 6 is sold in multiple regions, including India where it’s known as Asus 6z. To make software maintenance easier, Asus has a separate ROM for each of these regions and usually, software updates are rolled out to various regions at different timeframes.

For instance, the initial ZenFone 6 Android 10 update was targeting the units that use the worldwide (WW) and Indian (IN) firmware. A few days later, Asus released a new Android 10 build, this time with more regions {Europe (EU)/India (IN)/ Worldwide (WW)/ Russia (RU)} in mind.

Earlier this week, the Taiwanese company rolled out another ZenFone 6 Android 10 update and once again, this firmware was limited to models with the WW or IN firmware. This is despite the initial announcement post suggesting the same build can also be installed on the EU and RU models.

Matter of fact, several people went ahead and downloaded the said WW/IN firmware and installed on their EU models and apparently, this is causing them some issues with CTS test failure and Google Pay functionality.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time we are hearing about Google Pay issues on the ZenFone 6 since upgrading to Android 10. We captured the story earlier this month and unsurprisingly, those on the EU models were the ones affected probably after manually installing the initial Android 10 ROM for the WW/IN region.

This is an issue that can be addressed via a software update, but it’s also possible to take care of it from the server-side, which is probably what Asus has opted to do, at least going by the comments below picked from this XDA thread.

It took Asus about three days between rolling out the first ZenFone 6 Android 10 build for the WW/IN region and the second build that targeted the EU and RU regions as well.

Given that the most recent WW/IN build came out a few days ago, its likely Asus will push another Android 10 build this time with EU/RU ZenFone 6 devices in mind – one that won’t fail CTS test and break Google Pay services.
