Original story (published on April 2) follows:

A recent report revealed that Xiaomi is already working on the next iteration of its in-house MIUI skin.

Dubbed MIUI 12, the custom ROM is here to succeed the arguably underwhelming MIUI 11 (compared to MIUI 10) from 2019 and in fact, we already know a thing or two about availability and the features to expect when the update arrives.

A purported list of devices that will reportedly pick up the MIUI 12 update first is already doing rounds on the interwebs. Apparently, the beta rollout will begin in September with the stable version scheduled to arrive in December 2020.

When the firmware hits your device, there are a number of new features and enhancements to expect. We’ve shed light on a bunch of these features, among them full system dark mode, 16:9 ratio display, new GUI and multiple clone app support.

In an unofficial capacity, the following are some of the other features to look forward to when the MIUI 12 update begins rolling out. Note that not all of these features will be part of MIUI 12 when it starts hitting devices, but some – or most – will.

Perfect dark mode

MIUI 11 has the option to enable dark mode, but as you’d expect from an early version of the feature, the implementation isn’t right. Xiaomi is looking to spice things up in MIUI 12 by ensuring system apps and the general interfaces have perfect dark mode support.

More comprehensive system-level services

MIUI 12 reportedly has a 90% chance of picking up deeply integrated system-level services with a focus on providing users with health services to pick up from where MIUI 11 left off.

Revamped camera UI

A new camera UI is coming in MIUI 12, although there is only an 80% chance that this will materialize. The continued enhancements around camera modules meant changes to the UI were only a question of when and not if.

New navigation bar & gestures

The update to MIUI 12 will introduce a brand new navigation bar alongside new navigation gestures as the company looks to catch up with other vendors’ system animations.

The company is reportedly set to take after stock Android with a minimal bar at the bottom of the screen that when swiped opens home. Swiping and holding opens recent apps while swiping left and right will be for switching between apps.

New multi-tasking animations

Following the changes to the multitasking style that came with MIUI 11, Xiaomi is reportedly lining up a huge update to the Multitasking menu as part of the MIUI 12 update, tagging along an enhanced design and animations to go with.

As it stands, the new multitasking animations are guaranteed to show up in MIUI 12.

Notification box

With the ever-increasing number of push notifications, an efficient way of handling them on MIUI 12 will see Xiaomi device owners receive what is touted as a Notification box for housing various notifications in groups so that they don’t fill up your notification area.

Advertising service optimization

With the growing dislike of what Xiaomi does with ads in MIUI, the company is reportedly looking to sneak a new way of serving users with adverts, but it remains to be seen how this will be implemented. With an 80% chance of getting the nod, I can’t wait to see what Xiaomi is working on here.

Improved privacy management mechanism

With every Android OS iteration, improvements to privacy hardly miss out and indeed, MIUI 12, which will in some instances come running on top of Android 11, will also improve privacy by further tightening the software management and handing users more control.
