New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on October 30, 2019) follows:

Xiaomi played a major role in popularizing big screens on smartphones in what was dubbed phablets, that is, the middle ground between a smartphone and tablet. At the heart of this was the Xiaomi Mi Max series.

As the name suggests, the Mi Max series was all about the maxed-out screen size and, of course, battery capacity. The original model(s) came out in 2016 with a screen size of 6.44 inches and while the Mi Max 2 stuck with the same screen size, the battery grew from 4850mAh to 5300mAh.

Things got even bigger (better?) with the Mi Max 3 that arrived last July, this time with a 6.9-inch screen and a 5500mAh battery to keep it alive. With only one way to go, many expected that the Mi Max 4 should have arrived by now with probably a bigger screen and battery in a more compact body.

But as I write this, there is still no sign of the Mi Max 4. In fact, PiunikaWeb readers should recall our previous coverage on the Mi Max 4, where the company’s co-founder revealed that there won’t be a new Mi Max device this year.

Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun on the future of Mi Max and Mi Note series

At the time, Lei Jun, the co-founder, said that even the Mi Note family wouldn’t receive a new device this 2019, but recent reports suggest that we could, in fact, be treated to a new Mi Note 10 handset as the successor to the Mi Note 3 from 2017.

In what is one of the biggest plot twists, Xiaomi is now teasing the arrival of the Mi Note 10 as the first smartphone with a 108MP Penta camera, a few months after the co-founder revealed that there won’t be a new device in the Mi Note series.

This move has led to light speculations that the company could make a similar U-turn with respect to the Mi Max 4, but unlike the Mi Note series, there is no official word on this matter.

As speculations around the Mi Max 4 begin to take shape, the company has started rolling out the latest software update available for the Mi Max 3, that is, the MIUI 11 update. The Mi Max 3 MIUI 11 update arrived in China earlier this month and now its the turn of the global and Russian models.

Where the global Mi Max 3 MIUI 11 update is arriving as version V11.0.5.0.PEDMIXM, those in Russia should watch out for an update with software version V11.0.5.0.PEDRUXM. The updates, unfortunately, are based on Android Pie and not the latest Android 10 OS.

Stable MIUI based on Android Pie

The Mi Max 3 got Pie via a software update following its debut with Android Oreo preinstalled. For now, we can’t give any assurances regarding the devices update to Android 10, but even if it doesn’t get the official update, you can be pretty sure several custom ROMs will be available.

The OTA may take some time to arrive, but the best part is that we already have the download links to the new MIUI 11 update for manual installation.

As far as the Mi Max 4 is concerned, ours is only a hunch (and hope?) that Xiaomi will borrow a leaf from the Mi Note booklet and actually revive the Mi Max series contrary to Lei Jun’s words last summer.

Update (November 29)

Xiaomi has decided to push yet another new build (V11.0.6.0) as the proper stable version of MIUI 11 update for Mi Max 3 across the globe. Details here.
