Xiaomi Mi A3 September security update arrives, just in time for Android 10

Today marks the fourth day since Google started rolling out the stable version of Android 10 to the Pixel phones all the way from 2016 to the latest models unveiled earlier this year, the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL.

The company had been testing the OS since March 2019 and in May, it invited more non-Pixel devices into the beta program. This, essentially, was meant to give other device makers enough time to work on releasing timely updates to Android 10 alongside Google.

So far, only Essential and Xiaomi managed to get the OS ready for rollout on the first day of availability. It was nothing unusual for the former’s Essential Phone, but the latter’s Redmi K20 Pro surprised many when it started receiving a stable update to MIUI 10 based on Android 10.

Yes, you read that right! Even with one of the heaviest skins in MIUI, Xiaomi still managed to get the OS ready for the Redmi K20 Pro on the same day as Google. So far, the update has been spotted in China and India, which is simply crazy.

If anything, this is exactly what Google’s Android One program should be offering, but no device in the program has received a stable update to Android 10. Not even Nokia, which is quite unfortunate.

Still, this doesn’t mean that Android One devices are lagging behind in all aspects of software updates. As of this writing, one of these devices, the Xiaomi Mi A3, is already receiving an update that installs the latest September 2019 security patches.

This is the same security patch arriving as part of the Android 10 stable update, but no, the Mi A3 update is still based on Android 9 Pie. Sure, we expect that Xiaomi will eventually upgrade the Mi A3 to Android 10, but for now, the wait is still on.

When everyone is getting Android 10, we are getting security updates. Not great news.

The Mi A3 update is arriving over the air and weighs about 105MB, which is typical for any monthly security patch. As usual with OTA updates, though, it may take several days before all units receive the go-ahead to download the new patch.

Besides the new security patch, the Mi A3 update should also fix bugs and improve the general performance of the device. The update comes about a week after the device received a second update with the same August security patch.
