Wait, what? Motorola Moto G6 Android 10 update on the cards?

Most people would take a software update to a new OS over buying a new phone whenever Google rolls out a new version of Android. However, device vendors have limits when it comes to how long they offer software updates to certain devices.

Google gives its devices three major OS upgrades. OnePlus has been doing the same too, beginning with OnePlus 3/3T. Samsung, the leading smartphone vendor in the world, provides two OS upgrades to its devices, premium or not.

Motorola is among many other Android OEMs that only guarantee two OS upgrades for high-end (and midrange) devices while treating their budget market segment to single OS upgrades.

Not long ago, we revealed some details about the Moto G6 Plus Android 10 update. As it stands, the device, one of the best budget handsets from 2018, will not get a second OS upgrade following its debut with Android Oreo.

But why? According to Motorola support, the device has already received its one and only planned upgrade to Android 9 Pie.

Your moto g6 plus was launched in 2018, with Android 8 and the only operating system update that was planned for this product, was already made in February 2019 towards Android 9.

Now, in a classic case of the left and right hands not knowing what each one is doing, another customer rep now claims the standard Moto G6 Android 10 update is coming.

Going by the discussion in the screengrab above allegedly between a Moto G6 owner and customer support, the device should receive an update to Android 10. As hopeful as that may sound, the odds don’t look good here.

Fans of the Moto G series will know that the Moto G4 Plus got lucky and picked up two major OS upgrades – Nougat and Oreo. At the time, efforts by Moto G4 owners to get the OS like their Plus counterparts bore no fruits.

None in the Moto G5 series got two OS updates as well. Granted, the story is likely to be the same for the Moto G6 series and probably even the latest Moto G8 family. Either way, we will still keep an eye on the story and bring you news as and when we get them.

On the brighter side, security updates are still coming in, with the most recent bringing along the February patch level. Even better is that you can still get a taste of Android 10 via LineageOS 17.1, albeit unofficially, and we expect more custom ROMs for the Moto G6 series.
