After five months of beta testing Android Q, Google finally gave users of the Pixel phones the go-ahead to download and install the stable version of the OS – Android 10 – last week.
In addition to the Google Pixels and Essential Phone, the update to Android 10 was also made available for the Redmi K20 Pro on the first day, which is a bold statement from Xiaomi that hasn’t gone unnoticed around here.
Typically, device makers with heavy custom skins take their sweet time to implement their preferred changes before rolling out their stable version of Android. Essential, for instance, has a clean UI with no customizations, which explains why it manages to push updates alongside the big G.
However, Xiaomi did the unthinkable despite its heavily-customized MIUI 10 skin and released Android 10 stable for Redmi K20 Pro users on the same day the Google Pixels got it. This got me thinking why Samsung hasn’t even attempted to bring forth an open beta testing program up until now.
I’m pretty sure there are many others who are asking a similar question, but if you have been in Samsung’s camp long enough, you’ll know the Korean company is one that always takes its time to release software updates, but they eventually come through.
While the likes of HMD Global/Nokia, Huawei, OnePlus, and even Xiaomi have given us snippets of their Android 10 roadmaps, Samsung hasn’t shed light on when it plans to begin distributing the new OS and which devices will receive it.
Of course, the company is expected to make this information public at some point, but until then, a leaked roadmap is all we can dwell on for now. The leak comes from an unofficial Samsung Update page (Facebook, Instagram) and going by the expectations, it seems pretty legit.
As expected, the Galaxy S10 series is high on the list and so is the Galaxy Note 10 series and Galaxy Note 9. The Galaxy S9 duo is also included, but there is no place for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.
Given that Google and OnePlus are updating the OG Pixels and OnePlus 5/5T to Android 10, the S8 and Note 8 missing out on the new OS is such a shame, especially coming from such a big company like Samsung.
Even so, Samsung has the backing of Google’s policy that requires device makers to release at least two major Android OS updates, a cycle both the Galaxy Note 8 and S8 have already been through. It’s the same fate that befell the Galaxy S7 and S6 before it, so it shouldn’t surprise seasoned Sammy fans.
It’s because of the above policy on software updates that the likes of Samsung Galaxy J7, Galaxy J5, and Galaxy J3 from 2018 appear on the leaked roadmap. These three came preinstalled with Android Oreo and after Pie, the update to Android 10 will be their second and last OS upgrade.
Below is a screengrab of the leaked Samsung Android 10 update roadmap, but once again, this isn’t official so expect changes here and there. For instance, the Galaxy Tab S6 and Galaxy Tab Active Pro should find a slot somewhere in there at some point.
As you can see, the leaked roadmap doesn’t give any specific dates. Although we are confident the Galaxy S10 and perhaps the Note 10 will get Android 10 before the end of the year, we can’t say much about the release date for the other Samsung phones.
We will be here to update you on when Android 10 update begins rolling out for your Samsung device, so stay tuned.
