Behold dark mode fans! 'True white' Discord light mode available via canary channel

Bulletin boards and IRC channels are considered as the elements from the land before time, but those are the ancestors of modern social media cum online discussion platforms. You know, the classic example of old wine in a new bottle. Take Discord as the topic of discussion.

Discord combines the fundamental ideas of relay chat (yes, like IRC!), VoIP calling, content exchange, video streaming (usually gameplay) and messaging board. The cross-platform service came into existence less than 5 years ago, but nowadays it’s a household name.

Be it Android/iOS or Windows/macOS/Linux, Discord is omnipresent. The support for typical web browser based version and features like bot creation and extensive plugin support make the platform a go-to choice for new age community builders. And yes, dark mode is there since the inception.

Thing is, not everyone is the follower of Darth Vader. While the built-in black/greyish theme is indeed a great inclusion, Discord devs also give end users a choice to opt for a whiter ‘Light’ theme.

TBH, the current light theme is a frankenbuild. You can easily spot the grey color palette here and there in the existing one. No need to worry though, as the situation should be changed soon.

With the current light theme, the web UI of Discord should look like the above screenshot under stable channel. The canary build of Discord web app (canary.discordapp.com/channels/@me), on the other hand, now features a completely revamped ‘anti dark mode’, with eye blinding white (or whitish) UI elements.

Amadeus Demarzi, a frontend developer of Discord, hinted about the arrival of the new theme a few days ago. However, they were forced to delay the release due to numerous glitches. You can get the taste of the all-white light theme now if you are the chosen one (kidding, just random staged rollout).

Discord has not officially announced anything about the true white theme of the web UI in their blog yet. Guess they are still gathering feedback from testers and fixing them internally before going for a full-fledged release note.
