[Enabled after December update] T-Mobile to support eSIM on Google Pixel 4 & Pixel 4 XL

The first Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL shipments begin arriving this week and naturally, there are lots of small details, moreso, about carriers that many fans would want to know before committing their hard-earned money to buy one of these beauties.

For instance, Verizon Wireless users recently found out that there won’t be RCS support for the Google Pixel 4 out of the box, something that is beyond many people’s understanding given Google’s push for the adoption of this SMS technology.

If it makes you feel any better, T-Mobile buyers of the Pixel 4 phones are also facing the same fate, but both carriers have left room for the addition of RCS messaging feature at some point in future.

Another interesting development about the Pixel 4 phones is the dual SIM dual standby (DSDS) feature that relies on the eSIM functionality to allow room for the addition of a second SIM card.

eSIM support is a feature that is also available on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a phones, but its use is limited by the lack of carrier support. Here’s what T-Mobile says about eSIM support on the Pixel 3 devices.

This device has a built-in eSIM that is not supported by T-Mobile. If you set up your device with a T-Mobile SIM card, you won’t even see any eSIM settings.

In order to use both the eSIM and physical SIM slot on your T-Mobile Pixel 3 device, the former must be activated with another carrier that supports eSIM tech before inserting the T-Mobile SIM card in the latter slot. Otherwise, the eSIM slot will be rendered useless.

Still, some Pixel 3 users on the Un-carrier have found a way to enable T-Mobile eSIM support, but of course, with the help of the Magenta carrier’s support.

As it stands, some of these hassles may not be necessary for T-Mobile Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL units, at least a while after the official launch, although going through the T-Mo support may still be required to get going.

The carrier hasn’t shared official communication regarding the Pixel 4 eSIM support, but an official support page is already live, all but confirming the support for this feature.

Keep in mind that the page is currently filled with placeholders awaiting the full update with all the details you need to know about the T-Mobile Pixel 4 eSIM support, but I believe the page will be updated soon.

To recall, T-Mobile had already revealed that Pixel 4 DSDS (which relies on the eSIM feature) won’t be available at launch, which should explain why the T-Mobile Pixel 4 eSIM feature probably won’t be available out of the box either.

Update (December 27)

After the latest December security update, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are now open to the T-Mobile eSIM service. The build version that enables eSIM support on the duo is QQ1B.191205.011 and is available over the air.
