[Fix incoming] T-Mobile 5G phones continue to experience GPS issue even after fix

5G, the next generation in mobile connectivity is here with us. While it is still a couple of years shy of widespread adoption, more and more carriers especially in the west (T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T) are rolling out 5G networks.

5G-enabled devices are also getting more and more mainstream, with players like OnePlus and Samsung already selling these devices on carriers that do have 5G networks. These devices are pricy, which makes it even more absurd when they don’t work properly.

T-Mobile has been having issues with its 5G devices. Users of the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Edition for one narrated instances where their devices would stop updating location when they’re moving or driving. This caused Google Maps and other navigation apps to malfunction.

In an update that brought the December 2019 security patch level, the company bundled in fixes for the GPS issues that users were facing. Sadly, the issue might have been more than meets the eye.

A quick scroll through the forums and you are bound to come across users who, despite updating to the latest update, still face GPS issues. Basic troubleshooting like rebooting the device, even a factory reset after update yielded no results.

To make matters even worse, it is not only OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren users that are facing this issue. Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G users on T-Mobile are also reporting issues with GPS and battery issues.

As the issue was first raised back in December, T-Mobile reps on the community forums have since acknowledged the issue. This led to the rollout of the patch, at least to the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren.

As this issue persists, questions continue to be raised about what exactly might be causing this GPS issue on T-Mobile units. Is it a hardware issue or something that can be fixed with an OTA update?

We shall keep an eye on this story and update as/when we get more info from Samsung, OnePlus or T-Mobile.

Some users on the official T-Mobile forum have been actively engaging with the carrier on this issue. According to the reports, a fix is coming soon.

I was told by Twitter help that another OTA update is coming by the end of the 1st week in Feb to address the GPS issue. We shall see. All the folks that won a Note 10+ 5G during the game are going to be super disappointed if they don’t get this fixed before they get their devices!
