Qualcomm recently unveiled the ‘budget-friendly’ edition of their next generation X55 5G modem. Dubbed as Snapdragon X52, this module should be a household name in the next year. But what about phones having the first-gen Snapdragon X50 modem? The future is kinda clumsy.
Apart from the obvious power consumption and compatibility issues, the software update frequency is far from perfect on these phones. While the regular Mi MIX 3 got stable already received Android 10 (albeit via beta channel), the 5G model is stuck with Pie.
Samsung does have a beta program for Galaxy S10 5G, but that’s not applicable for the US model with Snapdragon chipset. The 5G variant of OnePlus 7 Pro is known for lagging behind its 4G counterpart in terms of software updates.
In the US, Sprint is carrying the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, but the model is quite different from the European one. Not only the updates are controlled by the wireless carrier, the bootloader is not unlockable.
While the EU model is lurking with October patch on top of Android Pie, Sprint is delivering a surprising update for the phone. Well, this is not Android 10, but November patch is far better than nothing.
There is a minor jump from the previous October patch update – from 9.5.14.GM25CC to 9.5.16.GM25CC. Sprint has yet to publish an official note regarding the new build, though the inclusion of Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) 3.0 is a noteworthy step.
Looks like the assurance from Sprint support regarding the Android 10 update is a hoax (as expected!).
OnePlus is working with the carrier partners to bring the update as soon as possible, but they are months behind from rolling out the stable OTA.
Based on the current R&D progress and compatibility with various partners, we’re expecting to launch the Android 10 system update for OnePlus 7 Pro 5G in the first quarter of 2020.
