It is no secret that the mobile industry today is a brutal one. The industry has seen some big names obliterated. Save for the market leaders today; Apple and Samsung, most other OEMs like Sonymobile have had to struggle at some point.

HTC, the once king of the Android ecosystem in the early 2010s is nowhere today. Nokia did manage to stage a comeback but others like Motorola and even Lenovo are struggling.

Sony Mobile has also been struggling. From selling over 40 Million units back in 2014 to barely selling 4 million by close of 2019, it is no secret that the Japanese giant’s smartphone division is not doing too well.

A few hawk-eyed users have recently noticed that Sony’s mobile division’s website, Sonymobile.com doesn’t seem to work anymore. Instead, users who enter the URL are redirected to Sony.com

Speculation is rife about why this is the case. Some are arguing that the Japanese OEM is probably packing up in a bid to exit the market. Others think it is simply an internal restructuring of resources.

While many people seem to be talking about this like it’s a bad thing, I actually think it’s a good thing. What’s everyone else think?

Some users also point out that Sony also closed down the Play Station forum so the company is most likely consolidating its online presence.

Closing the PS Forums website, and now the Sonymobile website. It seems like Sony is closing some sites to save some money (from maintenance) because they’re struggling on PS5’s price. Just speculation, I’m just a dumb person.

In response to what the company was doing in terms of the XpreiaBlog platform, the company said that;

We aim to transfer parts of the existing content to these new Communities, but it might take some time before it is completed. We will keep this forum open for comments for some time but please note that any comments posted from now on will not be transferred.

Members from USA, Canada and Asia Pacific can begin using these Communities now. Members from Europe should continue to use the current Mobile Forum until it is closed down.

Speculation is still high on what is next for Sony and its smartphone business. It is important to note that while Sony’s smartphone business might be struggling, that is not the only cookie jar that the Japanese company has its hand in.

Sony makes some of the best Home theatres systems in the business today. The TV industry also respects the kind of products from Sony. Gamers might also be acquainted with a certain little gaming platform, the PlayStation. I for one, don’t believe that the company, in general, is struggling.

As to what will become of Sony’s Mobile division, however, that is still up for debate. There still are Sony devices in the market today, and a really vibrant user community to accompany.
