Mi MIX series kickstarted the trend of minimal bezel in Android smartphones, although the actual credit should be reserved for Sharp Aquos Crystal. Since then, we have seen multiple innovative (sometimes uncanny) display panel designs – such as the first gen foldable phone from ZTE.

ZTE Axon M: I must say, the bezels are huge on this one!

In terms of dimensions, starting from 16:9 to 18/18.5:9, we are now in the era of ultra long 21:9 screens. Motorola is trying hard to make this aspect more mainstream by releasing phones such as Motorola One Vision, while Sony did the same with their 2019 lineup.

Xperia 1, the current flagship offering from the Japanese OEM, sports a remarkable 4K OLED screen with such long ratio. If you are little short on budget, then you can get the same taste with the mid-ranger Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus.

The first cost cutting factor is obviously the SoC, as you are getting a much weaker Snapdragon 630/636 on the aforementioned phone duo. The display panel is also downgraded from OLED to LCD, but that’s expected in the price range.

The Plus variant comes with slightly larger battery (3,000 versus 2,870 mAh), improved camera (telephoto lens) and bigger screen (6.5 versus 6 inches). Both of them run Android Pie with Sony’s custom skin on top. Similar to their big brother, Xperia 10/10 Plus are now getting August patches.

As you can see, software version 53.0.A.8.71 for Xperia 10 introduces a number of new features (Side sense gestures) including an up-to-date security patch. The jump is pretty significant, as the phone got its last update (53.0.A.6.92) back in early June.

Xperia 10 Plus, on the other hand, is getting the August OTA with the tag of 53.0.A.8.69. The saga is pretty much same as the regular Xperia 10, as the Plus variant is also bumped from May (53.0.A.6.88) to July via this new update.

The August OTA for Xperia 10/10 Plus are available to a limited set of users in various regions. Enthusiasts can use tools like XperiFirm to download the updated firmware directly from Sony updater servers and flash using Flashtool, but further discussions are beyond the scope of this article.
