Many will agree that LineageOS is the most popular custom ROM there is today, boasting a massive over 1.7 billion active installs. What makes LineageOS such a popular project is the ability to bring new versions of Android OS to older, unsupported devices.
This year, although a bit late, the project is expected to bring the new Android 10 OS to a myriad of devices as LineageOS 17.1. By this time last year, the developers had already published the official LineageOS 16.0 builds based on Android Pie for 30 devices.
On the brighter side, it appears that the next version of LineageOS 17.1 based on Android 10 is imminent. Sure, there are plenty of unofficial versions of this ROM based on Android 10 doing rounds, but to date, there is still no official build for any device.
Not long ago, the LineageOS team published a list of devices that will soon receive nightly builds of LineageOS 17.1. The likes of Fairphone 2, HTC One M8, Moto Z, and even the Galaxy S4 are on the list, although the early builds have since been taken down “due to some issues with signing.”
In the middle of all these, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners find themselves unattended to, both officially and unofficially. In the former case, we already have the answers and we just got some details on the latter case.
When asked whether the Galaxy S8 Android 10 update can be expected as official LineageOS 17.1 at some point, the LineageOS team had a cryptic response, as seen below.
As part of decrypting the above response, it’s worth noting that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ didn’t receive the official LineageOS 16 update based on Android Pie, but they got the unofficial version.
Typically, devices that receive the previous LineageOS update stand a chance of getting an update to the next iteration. The fact that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ missed out on the official LOS 16 update could mean the duo also misses out on the official LOS 17.1 update.
On the flip side, the recent list of LOS 17.1 builds had new names joining the project for the first time ever, namely the U.S. unlocked LG G5 and the global LG V20. So, does this mean the Galaxy S8 Android 10 update could arrive via the official LOS 17.1 ROM? Probably.
Even better is that the unofficial LineageOS 17.1 build is already up for grabs. But don’t get too excited given that the two also received the unofficial LOS 16 build, but never got the official version.
