Samsung Galaxy S10 5G October security update rolling out

Samsung has built a reputation as not the best smartphone vendor in the world of timely software updates. The Korean tech giant often takes the blame for the slow adoption of new versions of Android OS considering the huge number of devices it pumps into the market annually.

Case in point is the latest switch to Android 10. So far, only Google Pixels and a handful of other non-Google phones have received the stable version to date. Essential Phone, OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro are the devices in question, still no Samsung device on the list.

One would argue that Samsung had the chance to unveil the Galaxy Note 10 preinstalled with Android 10, but this opportunity passed on to the OnePlus 7T and the Huawei Mate 30 series, although the latter doesn’t include core Google apps and services out of the box.

But even as it lags behind in the rush to roll out Android 10, the company has really stepped up on matters of Android security updates. Not only do plenty of Samsung devices receive security patches, but there is also some element of timeliness in the latest releases.

Last month, the Galaxy Note 10 was quick to jump to the September security patches shortly after the updates went live for the Pixels. This month, Samsung even managed to beat Google to the latest October security patches.

The update first went live for Galaxy A50 users a few days ago before being joined by the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy J2 Core. As of this writing, a new Samsung Galaxy S10 5G update is rolling out with the same October security patch.

Samsung-centric publication SamMobile reports that the Galaxy S10 5G update is arriving over the air as version G977BOXM2ASI7, tagging along the latest security patches from both Google and Samsung. So far, the software is available for download in Switzerland, but more regions should receive it in the coming days.

Perhaps this early rollout to this very model (Swiss) is because it never got the September security patch. According to the official software update tracker, the last update for this model last came out in early September and it included August security patches.

Let’s just hope this will be the one and only occasion that Samsung actually skips security updates for this premium device. Do keep in mind that the Galaxy S10 5G update (OTA) is still out there, so be patient as you wait for the download notification to arrive on your unit.
