As the quest for better call quality continues, we have seen technologies like Voice over LTE (VoLTE) taking a strong foothold in the industry. More and more carriers support this and newer smartphones do so as well. The next frontier in this pursuit is Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi).

Already, many OEMs from the likes of Realme have already pushed out updates to enable VoWiFi on their devices with more devices in line to get the same feature.

Not to be left behind, Xiaomi is also pushing out updates to enable this feature which is quickly becoming essential in many markets, to its devices.

Some Redmi Note 7 users have reported having VoWiFi working for them on supported carriers. This is after an update bearing the February 2020 Android security patch update that rolled out to the device yesterday in India.

Granted, the user on Reddit confirms that VoWiFi on Jio is enabled after this update. We still don’t have any form of confirmation for Airtel. It is, therefore, unclear whether this is just by chance or by design.

On Xiaomi’s forum, however, we got a confirmation that indeed, VoWiFi is expected to be coming to the Redmi Note 7. In a comment response to one user, a Xiaomi Forum moderator clarifies that the Redmi Note 7 is going to get support for VoWiFi. This is expected to roll out with an update version 11.0.9.

This is a welcome move from the giant Chinese OEM as VoWiFi is getting increasingly popular in many markets, including India. To not support VoWiFi is quickly becoming the exception, and no one wants to be stuck with a device that does not support VoWiFi.

Earlier this year, we saw Xiaomi enable support for VoWiFi on a number of its popular smartphones in India. These devices include the Redmi Y3. K20, K20 Pro, Note 7 Pro, Note 8 Pro, Redmi 7 and the Redmi 7A. More on that here.

At the time of writing, the Redmi Note 7 still runs on Android 9 Pie with plans to update it to Android 10. We have seen Redmi Note 7 Android 10 beta updates but nothing stable yet. Xiaomi says that the Android 10 update is under development, but it won’t give any ETAs just yet.
