Upon dissecting the product portfolio of a particular phone maker (which is really hard for Chinese OEMs due to their complex naming scheme and knack towards rebranding), you can usually find a pretty interesting pattern in terms of the evolution of hardware components and software features.

Exception that proves the rule: Mi A3 regain the 3.5 mm headphone jack which was not present in Mi A2

Well, here we go – as you can find tons of similar exceptions among Xiaomi devices. Sometimes, a newer generation does not mean actual upgrade over the older phone!

Let’s talk about Redmi Note 6 Pro. The short-lived successor to 2018’s highly popular Redmi Note 5/Note 5 Pro was nothing but the output of Xiaomi’s inclusion in the notch bandwagon. The internals are basically identical.

Due to the similarities between two devices, both of them actually share a common kernel source. Redmi Note 6 Pro was launched with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, and received Android Pie based MIUI 10.2 update back in May.

However, Xiaomi needed to pull back the update (as well as the subsequent MIUI 10.3 OTA) due to multiple bugs and glitches. They re-released the Pie build at the end of June, and looks like another new update becomes live for Redmi Note 6 Pro.

Similar to recent batch of MIUI 10.3 based OTA updates, the new build aka MIUI 10.3.5.0 brings June security patch and a bunch of software fixes to the phone. The full changelog is as follows:

System

– Updated Android Security Patch to June 2019. Increased system security.

Contacts

– Fix: Contacts couldn’t be deleted from SIM cards in some cases

Lockscreen, status bar, Notification shade

– New: Introducing customizable Lock screen clock (Settings > Lock screen & password > Advanced settings). New Lock screen clock doesn’t work with third party themes.

– New: Use your fingerprint to open Home screen once you unlocked the device using face data and stayed on the Lock screen

– Fix: Media volume couldn’t be restored after receiving a notification

Settings

– Optimization: Sorting principles for Wi-Fi networks

Mi Cloud

– Optimization: Improved sync across multiple devices

On the other hand, the global variant of Mi MIX 2S also gets the June security patch in the form of MIUI 10.3.4.0. The design centric phone got the lockscreen clock and a half-baked dark mode with May security patch earlier in the month of June.
