Redmi K20 Pro, Essential Phone & Google Pixels get Android 10 update on launch day

When Google published September 2019 security updates based on Android Q about two weeks ago, it was evident that the stable version would begin rolling out in early September.

True to this, the search giant started rolling out Android 10 update to the Google Pixels on September 3, tagging along some cool features, UI changes, and performance improvements.

Last year, the Essential Phone was the only non-Google device to join the Pixels in receiving the stable version of Android Pie on the first day of availability. The story is still the same with the new update to Android 10, but only for select Open Market customers.

The update is rolling out to all Pixel phones ranging from the newest Pixel 3a back to the 2016 Pixels, which is pretty impressive from the search giant, especially with respect to the OG Pixels.

Android 10 is the third major Android OS update for the original Pixels following their 2016 debut running Android 7.1 Nougat. OnePlus has also followed in the footsteps of Google and it will be providing a third major OS upgrade to the OnePlus 5 and 5T, just like it did with OnePlus 3 and 3T.

With Android Q beta having accommodated more than 15 non-Google phones, other device makers are also ramping up their Android 10 development, among them Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand and its newest kids on the block, Redmi K20 and K20 Pro.

As of this writing, the Redmi K20 Pro already has access to the stable version, which is simply insane coming from a company with such a heavy custom skin running on top of AOSP.

The standard Redmi K20 also has access to Android 10, but only in beta. Prior to receiving the stable Android 10 update, the Redmi K20 Pro had been testing the OS for a few weeks in readiness for the rollout.

It’s worth noting that the Redmi K20 Pro Android 10 update is still running MIUI 10 and not the newer MIUI 11, which is typical of Xiaomi. If anything, the upcoming MIUI 11 will borrow lots of Android 10 features to include in the stock version.

OnePlus 7 Android 10 open beta

Some in the OnePlus camp had high hopes that OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro would be updated to the stable Android 10 alongside the Pixels, but this wasn’t the case. Instead, the Chinese vendor has pushed the first Open Beta that now opens the doors for the public to try the new OS.

In a forum post, OnePlus announced the Open Beta 1 for the duo that installs Android 10 beta on the devices ahead of the stable rollout. Being a beta version, some of the known issues are app compatibility, system lag and stability issues. Below is the full changelog:

System

• Upgraded to Android 10
• Brand new UI design
• Enhanced location permissions for privacy
• New customization feature in the Settings allowing you to choose icon shapes to be displayed in the Quick Settings

Full-screen Gestures

• Added inward swipes from the left or right edge of the screen to go back
• Added a bottom navigation bar to allow switching left or right for recent apps

Game Space

• New Game Space feature now joins all your favorite games in one place for easier access and better gaming experience

Smart display

• Supported intelligent info based on specific times, locations and events for Ambient Display (Settings – Display – Ambient Display – Smart Display)

Message

• Now possible to block spam by keywords for Message (Messages – Spam – Settings -Blocking settings)
