Back in 2017, Xiaomi launched Mi 5c – a mid-ranger phone powered by Surge S1 SoC. It was designed by the Chinese OEM itself. This was the first baby step to reduce the dependency from de-facto chip providers like Qualcomm and MediaTek.
Unlike Huawei or Samsung, Xiaomi did not stick with their in-house platform. Perhaps it was not matured enough, so the company made their collaboration with Qualcomm even stronger. One of the first commercially available 5G phone – Mi MIX 3 5G – is based on Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem.
On the other hand, the OEM maintains a low profile relationship with MediaTek. 2018’s Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A were quite a surprise, as those were the first Helio chipset powered phones in India from Xiaomi. However, the Android Pie update for both phones was nothing but a chaos.
After a long series of release, cancellation, re-release and further pull back session, Xiaomi delivered the ‘stable’ version of MIUI 10 flavored MIUI 11 for both Redmi 6 and 6A at the end of September.
Apparently the engineering team is doing a pretty good work, because MIUI 11 is reportedly hitting the phone duo. Owners of Redmi 6/6A are receiving half-a-gig OTA package with plenty of new goodies.
