Gone are the days when security patch updates were almost exclusive to Google devices. Of course, devices with Android builds that are close to stock Android also benefited from these. These include Essential, Nokia – just to mention but a few.
Today, phone makers like Samsung and Realme are performing extraordinarily in terms of delivering timely security updates – even if their skins are nothing close to stock Android.
Talking about Realme, the Chinese OEM is now rolling out a new security update for Realme 5. Although it is dubbed as January 2020 OTA, the included patch level is still December 2019. This comes a few days after the Pro variant of the phone received the same patch.
The update, which brings the software version running on this device up to A.23, bears the following changelog:
Security
– Android security patch: December 2019
System
– Fixed some known bugs and improved system stability
Realme 5s, i.e. the enhanced camera variant, is also getting a similar update. As both device share same firmware, the software version in this case is nothing but A.23. The OTA also bears the exact same changelog as the previous one.
Security
– Android security patch: December, 2019
System
– Fixed some known bugs and improved system stability
Before this A.23 build, both devices received another update (A.20) in early December. It brought in the November 2019 security patch for the phone duo.
These are all OTA updates. As such, in true Realme fashion, it will have a staged rollout. This means that the OTA will be randomly pushed out to a limited number of users. This will then be followed by a broader rollout in a few days after making sure there are no critical bugs.
However, if you are not the patient type and you can’t wait for the OTA to hit your device, below is the download link. This (o)zip is the same for both Realme 5 and 5s, so you can safely use it on either of the phones.
