Thanks to the enormous developer community, there is absolutely no shortage of custom ROMs for Pocophone F1. Those we want to get the most out of their phones often switch from stock MIUI and flash a third party Android distribution, such as LineageOS.
However, there was a sudden turn of events that rattled the aftermarket development community.
A DMCA takedown notice issued by Beijing based SenseTime Technology effectively halted the development of LineageOS and every derivative ROM out there for Poco F1 (as well as other Xiaomi/Redmi phones). The developers are still trying to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi discontinued Pocophone F1 in Philippines, although the company promises to support the device with periodic software updates. We know Android Q update for the phone is in works, and the Chinese OEM is also testing the next version of MIUI aka MIUI 11 for this budget beast.
As the public beta channel of global MIUI was shut down to speed up regular OTA delivery, Poco F1 received its last monthly security patch during the third week of July. The build (MIUI 10.3.6.0) also brought June security patch along with various lock screen related enhancements.
Alvin Tse, head of Pocophone Global, has been hinting about the new monthly OTA for Poco F1 since last few days. Judging from the conversation Twitter, Xiaomi allegedly planned to skip the July security patch and straight away deliver August patchset in this upcoming update.
Well, a handful of Pocophone F1 owners are finally receiving this update, but there is a catch! For some unknown reasons, the Chinese OEM opted for July security patch in this build (MIUI 10.3.7.0) instead of August.
This month’s Android security bulletin deals with various Qualcomm related vulnerabilities, thus delaying it another month or so is rather careless – don’t you think so?
