OPPO gradually ditched the flagship Find lineup in favor of the Reno series. They did not entirely abandon the legacy devices, as OPPO Find X recently received Android Pie based ColorOS 6 update via soak testing. Anyway, the eccentric shark-fin design is here to stay, cause the second gen Reno phones are already here.
Besides eye-catching hardware configurations, OPPO is focusing hard on the software side as well. They opened up the window of bootloader unlocking for the original Reno and Reno 10x Zoom Chinese variants. Moreover recent beta update for these phones also introduced cross-brand file transfer support and Google CameraX compatibility.
Although the current ColorOS 6.x distribution is based on Android Pie, OPPO Reno users got the taste of Android Q in the form of beta since a few months. The OEM recently started the limited public trial for stable Android 10 update for the phone, but only in China.
Interestingly, there is no increment in the version number of the ColorOS layer in this beta version. Technically the final update should be tagged as ColorOS 7 (or ColorOS 10, if OPPO prefers to keep the numbering scheme in sync with Android like OnePlus).
Realme, an offshoot of OPPO, is gradually building a revamped distribution which may or mayn’t be based on the ColorOS base. Their mysterious venture is called ‘Project X’ (popularly referred as Realme OS), and we found several improvements (including the dark mode) via leaked builds.
Madhav Sheth, CEO of Realme India, recently confirmed about rolling out system-wide dark mode support for every phone in their product portfolio. We are still not sure whether they will make that happen via Realme OS (or Realme Edition of ColorOS), but now we do know about the existence of ColorOS 7.
This info came from Shen Yiren, Vice President of OPPO. He ‘accidentally’ confirmed that OPPO Reno 10x Zoom would get the seventh generation of ColorOS skin, presumably via upcoming Android 10 beta. In fact, the statement assured us that OPPO had no plan to bump the version number like OnePlus.
