For quite some time, Oppo was one of the least favorite smartphone vendors for anyone looking for devices that receive regular software updates. In fact, so terrible was the company that its smartphones hardly received any major Android OS upgrade, not even the popular Oppo R series.
However, things have been changing gradually over the recent past, perhaps with the help of Google’s sterner stance on software updates. For instance, Oppo has a device in Android Q beta program, the Oppo Reno, just like last year where the Oppo R15 Pro took part in Android P beta.
While Oppo may not have multiple devices in the ongoing Android Q beta program, the fact that the last two editions of the program have each had an Oppo device says a lot about the company’s direction regarding software updates.
The Oppo R17 and R17 Pro are still trialing Android Pie in India. The update arrived a few weeks ago as part of ColorOS 6 and a stable version is expected soon, but for now, lets put aside Android OS stories and concentrate on the matter at hand.
As of this writing, owners of the Oppo R17 and Oppo R17 Pro in India can download and install the most up-to-date software that installs August 2019 security patch. The update is arriving as version CPH1879EX_11_A.10 for the R17 and version CPH1877EX_11_A.18 for the R17 Pro.
Below is the changelog provided for the Oppo R17:
New Android security patch of August 2019 to improve system security

Apparently, the full firmware weighs in at 2950MB. Oppo says the update was published on August 12, but we have yet to see traces of the OTA rollout.
The changelog for Oppo R17 Pro is also the same, but as already highlighted, the software version and file size is different from the standard R17. Also, Oppo published the release notes of the R17 Pro a day after the R17, but the OTA rollout for both should begin at the same time.
However, similar to the standard R17, we haven’t received any reports suggesting that the OTA roll out is ongoing. But the fact that the download files are live means the OTA rollout isn’t too far from now.
There is always the option to wait until the OTA is pushed to your device. But if patience isn’t a virtue you can practice for now, you can grab the download files below and do a manual upgrade of your software. However, be sure you know how this works.

For those who would wish to install the update manually on their Oppo R17 or R17 Pro, follow the steps below:
1. Using your phone, download the correct firmware for your device from above and save it in the root of your microSD card. In case you used a PC to download the file, transfer it to your microSD card. Don’t save it inside any folder.
2. With the microSD card inside your phone, turn it off.
3. Proceed by booting into recovery mode. To do this, press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for some seconds until your phone enters Recovery Mode.
4. In recovery mode, select Install from storage device > Install from SD and find the file you downloaded on your microSD card above.
5. Tap on the firmware and confirm the installation by tapping Yes. Your device will reboot and start updating, a process that will take some time, so be patient.
To skip all of the above hassles, you can as well sit back and wait for the OTA download notification to arrive probably over the weekend or sometime next week.
