OnePlus and camera performance.
Until now, the Android community don’t want to put them together. Fellow Chinese OEM Huawei (along with their subsidiary Honor) has achieved critical and commercial success with their AI infused camera processing, but OnePlus failed to reach to the premium tier.
However, the Chinese OEM is trying to cross the hurdle with a revamped camera stack in the OnePlus 7 series. OnePlus opted for the popular 48 MP Sony IMX586 sensor (12 MP effective output) as the primary rear camera module.
The beefier Pro variant is blessed with additional ultrawide and telephoto sensors, alongside laser/PDAF autofocus. Regarding the real world performances, Wired UK guys got their hands on the pre-release unit. You can read their feedback in this article.
Shutter lag of 0.3 seconds or less makes the OnePlus 7 Pro feel instant enough, if not quite Pixel 3-fast. You can shoot right into the sun and still get usable images thanks to Auto HDR so ingrained the option to turn it off is tucked away in the settings menu.
When it comes to camera benchmarking, the Android community member prefer to deep dive into something else – much like the feedback from DxOMark Image Labs. As an addon, these guys maintain a handy scoreboard which is useful for comparison.
Guess the score of the OnePlus 7 Pro?
Yes! They secured the second place in DxOMark’s ranking. While the camera performed incredibly well in areas like autofocus, texture recognition, color balance or noise reduction, it fall behind Huawei in case of long range zooming.
Things deteriorate somewhat at long-range zoom distances, when the OnePlus 7 Pro’s digital zoom processing starts to kick in. Detail drops off at long-range distances, which is visible especially when compared to the P30 Pro in the samples below. (This can be at least partly attributable to the fact that the OnePlus zoom produces 12Mp images up to a 3x zoom level, but drops to an 8Mp resolution beyond that.)
Interested reader should head over to the original review for further details.
The Pro variant of OnePlus 7 is also the first OnePlus phone to use motorized selfie camera. While reviewers are satisfied with the performance of the popup mechanism after repetitive toggling, someone went one step further and examined the internal mechanisms.
Readers should guess the name of the guy: he’s none other than Zack Nelson aka JerryRigEverything!
Oneplus already started selling the OnePlus 7 Pro via their official channels since May 15 (in Europe). US OnePlus fans need to 2 days extra.
Open sales at oneplus.com start on May 17 in North America, while our friends in Europe will be able to join a community drop on May 15 in Europe with priority shipping and Crash/ Drop and Breakage insurance (6 months) at half off.
You can find further details about the open sales by visiting this thread. I would mention that if you’re looking for faster updates and dual SIM, you should order the phone directly from OnePlus, instead of choosing the T-Mobile variant.

The global team also organized a dedicated AMA session regarding the launch of OnePlus 7 series. Take a look at this article to get into the discussion.
BTW, there is something to tell from my end.
I’m going to retire from writing these daily dose articles for a while. Ever since the first daily dose, it’s been an incredible journey. But real life duties are making things hard.
But hey! It’s not a dead end. I’ll try to get back if you guys want me to. So do let us know your feedback.
