OnePlus News Daily Dose #30: OnePlus 7 Nightscape, NYC Open Ears, OxygenOS bugs and more!

Leaks, damned leaks, and concepts.

Readers may find a bizarre similarity between the above statement and a popular phrase. I must say, the single common thing between them is the persuasive power of the third object.

Let me elaborate it more: the original saying is “Lies, damned lies, and statistics”. People often abuse the numbers and statistics to boost their logic in a debate, and that practice is mocked by the expression.

In a similar manner, when the making of a concept video was presented as an exclusive leak of the product, we got butterflies in stomach.

Fortunately, Concept Creator has finally finished the conceptualization (I’m not playing with words) of OnePlus 7 with the help of the leaked renders by Steve H.McFly aka @OnLeaks. Oh, and he has found the ‘leak’ quite funny.

Interested readers can take a look at the ~2 minutes long video to get an early glimpse of the upcoming phone from OnePlus.

Time for some official news and activities.

OnePlus loves to collect user feedback which help them to shape up their design and development strategy. They provide a dedicated Open Beta channel of OxygenOS, arrange AMAs, and last but not least – organize Open Ears forum to connect with their followers at the grass-root level.

In past, there were a number of such Open Ears forum: Hamburg’s one was about Camera whereas they discussed about customer services at the Stockholm event.

San Francisco’s forum covered OxygenOS as a whole, which effectively materialized the (in)famous OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule.

US OnePlus fans get another chance, as OnePlus is going to arrange another Open Ears forum… this time on the east coast.

This year’s forum will focus on the OxygenOS experience, specifically for devices in our market. It will be held on April 13, in New York City. Applications are open to all US residents. We plan to select up to 30 participants this time. As we particularly want to reach out to users in our area this time, some spots will be accordingly weighted toward users from the tri-state area.

Interested ones should fill up a mini questionnaire first, and then pitch the reasons to pick them on the corresponding thread.

Entries will be accepted until 11:59 pm ET on March 24. OnePlus will announce the name of the selected applicants by the end of this month.

The Shenzhen based OEM is known for their developer friendly attitude since the beginning of their journey. OnePlus phones are always adored by the modding community for their hassle free bootloader unlock policy, availability of necessary source codes as well as the dev seeding program.

Perhaps that’s why they decided to shake things a little:

Developers could not help themselves, but to have some fun.

Kidding apart, the Chinese smartphone maker has taken some serious steps to squash out bugs reported by end users. They have a separate ‘Feedback’ section in their official forums for submitting bug reports.

We can spot two new sticky threads there, created by OnePlus staff Abdulbasithmh who is also in-charge of the bug hunting.

The structure of both threads are quite similar. Abdul has posted the following in them:

I’m listing the known issues that we are currently working for the current version of the open beta and stable builds for OnePlus 5/6 and 5T/6T Devices.

, and listed commonly reported bugs.

It seems that OnePlus is pushing 5/5T and 6/6T to long term maintenance mode, which is inevitable as the arrival of OnePlus 7 (and the unnamed 5G phone) is imminent.

Meanwhile, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has posted a link to a survey:

The theme of survey is to choose the ‘best’ picture from group of pairs. Are we looking at the early samples of OnePlus 7 low light photography?

FYI, the EXIF tags are removed from the images, so we can’t get the name of the device via which the photos were taken. OnePlus is probably working hard to compete with other OEMs with their own low-light photo processing mode aka Nightscape.

Talking about photography, OnePlus UK is collaborating with famous UK based photographer Mr Whisper and they are going to organize a photo walk session in London.

Join OnePlus and London based photographer @mrwhisper for a free photowalk in London’s trendy Shoreditch! This event is open to mobile photographers of all experience levels. We will be meeting at 5pm, around Shoreditch. Location TBD.
