After the unsuccessful venture with the ‘mini’ flagship aka OnePlus X, OnePlus started a trend of releasing a half-yearly refreshed model since 2016. OnePlus 3T, the first one in this series, featured a slightly upgraded SoC (Snapdragon 821 over 820), larger battery and revamped selfie camera compared to OnePlus 3.
This year, the Chinese OEM broke their usual pattern and released three separate phones in the second quarter. The mainstream OnePlus 7 Pro (we are not considering the T-Mobile variant as a separate one) is accompanied by a budget oriented OnePlus 7.
On the other hand, a limited release 5G compatible variant is also there. Built upon the foundation of OnePlus 7 Pro, the first 5G phone from the company have separate update channel than the other two. As expected, each of them has unique internal codename.
OnePlus’ affection towards foods can be seen in this context as well, as the OnePlus 7 Pro is named after ‘guacamole’. Interestingly, the codenames of other variants are coined by adding different suffix after the ‘guacamole’ string.
In a nutshell, the T-Mobile OnePlus 7 Pro is internally known as ‘guacamolet‘ (t for T-Mobile I presume), while regular OnePlus 7 carries the tag of ‘guacamoleb‘ (b for basic?). OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is dubbed as ‘guacamolec‘, and I’m pretty much confused here.
Here comes the twist in the story. We know US will eventually get a new OnePlus 5G phone in collaboration with Sprint. Pete Lau, co-founder and CEO of OnePlus, also confirmed about the company’s involvement in the making of a second 5G phone which should be revealed by the end of this year.
Well, we found another concrete evidence about a new phone from OnePlus by digging the firmware. To be precise, the latest Developer Preview 4 of Android Q build for OnePlus 7 (Pro) contains a reference of ‘guacamoleg‘ – a completely new codename!
We are at the middle of the third quarter this year, so it could be possible that OnePlus is secretly preparing the upcoming OnePlus 7T or OnePlus 7T Pro running Android Q out of the box. The codename can also be related to the second 5G device, but it is impossible deduce anything for sure at this moment.
The codename also indicates thats the OEM is finalizing Android Q based OxygenOS which should be released as version 10 in near future. The mysterious OnePlus phone should come with the revamped version of OxygenOS too. That’s all for now. ?
