Carrier versus unlocked – this is the one of the fearsome debates of all time in the smartphone industry. Getting the phone by paying it upright and enjoying faster software updates may not even be possible for a large chunk of users, especially in countries like US and Canada.
Luckily, the scenarios is not same for every phone out there. Google’s Pixel phones, once exclusive to Verizon, regularly get monthly patches similar to their unlocked counterparts.
In case of OnePlus, the situation is slightly different. Besides some imposed limitations, the update frequency of T-Mobile branded OnePlus 7 Pro is almost at per with the regular unlocked model. The carrier even rolled out June security patch to OnePlus 6T a day before the global unit.
Talking about OnePlus 7 Pro, the T-Mobile variant got May update at the end of June. Compared to the unlocked model, the delay was almost negligible.
However, June security patch along with various fixes was rolled out a few days ago to regular OnePlus 7 Pro. Those who are owning the T-Mobile branded unit miss those bug fixes till date.
Here comes the surprise from T-Mobile, as the US carrier is currently distributing the July security patch (skipping June altogether) to OnePlus 7 Pro in the form of OxygenOS 9.5.9.GM31CB. The size of the incremental OTA from 9.5.8 build is roughly 323 MB.
As you can see, the changelog mentions nothing other than the updated security patch level. We are not sure whether all the fixes from OxygenOS 9.5.9/9.5.10 (9.5.9 was taken down due to bugs related to double tap to wake) are being incorporated in this new build or not.
People are discussing about this unexpected OTA on their T-Mobile OnePlus 7 Pro over the official forum and r/OnePlus subreddit, but no announcement has been made so far. As always, the update tracker page from T-Mobile is gloriously outdated so far.
Although we have the download link of the update in hand, we decided not to include it from this time, as there is no feasible way to sideload the OTA zip on T-Mobile OnePlus 7 Pro.
Hopefully the unlocked OnePlus 7 Pro will get the July update soon. No need to bash the ‘Check for updates’ button though, as we are going to cover the news anyway!
