For the last couple of days, we are seeing reports from OnePlus 6T users saying their phone or dialer app crashes as they try to launch it. The error they get is “Phone keeps stopping.” Following is a screenshot shared by an affected user. Take a look:
Of course, this is a big issue as it kills the primary use of a smartphone being a phone first. Here are complaints from some users facing this problem:
when I try and open the app to call people it says phone keeps stopping having to use Google assistant to call people I’m on 9.0.1
same with mine and my daughter’s. pop up say Phone app keeps stopping
I just got the one plus 6t today and everything was working fine but now the phone application continuously crashes. I have tried restarting the device as well as clearing the phone app’s cache. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?
Many of the complainants confirmed they tried several steps to fix the problem, but failed.
yes I have restarted a couple times and let it sit over night off
update tried clearing cache in recovery mode and phone app still no longer works, any other ideas without Factory reset?
went as far as clearing the cache for the app itself rebooting still not working so I rebooted into recovery mode clear the cache in the entire device still no work I read on different threads that people have done a factory reset and there’s still no working option
Going through a lot of these complaints, I realized the issue is being majorly reported by T-Mobile subscribers.
If your OnePlus 6T on T-Mobile is also experiencing these phone app crashes, we have good news for you. A workaround or a temporary fix has come to light that has worked for multiple users.
The fix involves uninstalling and reinstalling the TMobile Visual Voicemail app.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling you TMobile Visual Voicemail app. I did that today with customers and it fixed the problem since deleting that app will actually cause your phone to stop working
I have had a few customers come into my T-Mobile store with the T-Mobile variant OnePlus 6T indicating that the Phone application was crashing when you either open it or open it and select the Contacts tab. I was able to reproduce the issue and immediately began troubleshooting the device such as wiping the cache partition, clearing the Phone app and Contacts app cache; still no luck.
What fixed the issue? I uninstalled the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail application and reinstalled it to the phone and it fixed the problem. Please note that you cannot just uninstall the VVM application, you have to reinstall it. I’m not too sure what is causing the issue itself or how they correlate with one another, but it worked. I’m sure with the update T-Mobile is pushing out soon that it will be fixed
Several users confirmed this did the trick for them:
This worked for me. At first, I only uninstalled the app early and that didn’t work but once I reinstalled mobile visual voicemail it started working again. Hopefully this is a permanent fix
Yup, did the same as you and no more crashing
I too been having the problem and just did as you said with visual voicemail and fixed!
