New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Luring potential customers by presenting new features is part of a few age-old tactics in marketing. In the case of smartphones, most of these hardware independent functionalities could be brought on older devices with software updates. But the OEMs seldom backport them for the sake of exclusivity.

However, OnePlus is trying to break the glass ceiling. The Chinese OEM officially confirmed that multiple OnePlus 7 series exclusive OxygenOS feature would be eventually backported to older phones, such as OnePlus 6/6T and 5/5T.

According to Manu J., Global Product Operations Manager of OnePlus, some of these backported features will find their way to OnePlus 6 series first. OnePlus 5 and 5T will get them eventually, but some delays might occur due to squashing out the incompatibilities.

DC dimming

This is an alternative method to adjust the screen brightness, by changing the circuit power of the screen. When enabled, it will reduce screen flickers at low brightness, but may lead to abnormal colors being displayed in some cases.

We will introduce this feature in Open Beta builds for the OnePlus 6 and 6T and then evaluate for the OnePlus 5 and 5T.

May end’s Open Beta 33/31 for OnePlus 5 and 5T did lack of these features, but the company seems to be confident enough to bring them now. Yes, the newest OTA update for OnePlus 5/5T is now rolling with Digital Wellbeing, Fnatic mode and a whole lot of goodies!

The unified changelog of Open Beta 34 for OnePlus 5 & Open Beta 32 for OnePlus 5T is as follows:

System

– Updated Android security patch to 2019.06

– Added digital wellbeing (Settings – Digital Wellbeing)

Fnatic Mode

– Brand new Fnatic mode offering you immersive gaming experience

As a matter of fact, the OnePlus 5 series becomes the first in the OEM’s portfolio to receive the latest June 2019 security patches. The inclusion of Digital Wellbeing is a noticeable improvement, as this particular feature is not yet present in OnePlus 7 lineup.

As per early adopters, OnePlus secretly included the native screen recording application in these builds as well. Interestingly, the changelog doesn’t mention anything about it.
