OnePlus, despite being one of the younger OEMs in the smartphone industry, continues to make waves. The company came into the limelight by offering flagship specs and a fraction of the price of traditional high end phones.

True, OnePlus devices have since slowly crept up the price range, but still manage to retain a decent price-to-feature ratio. These devices are also endeared because of their operating system. OxygenOS is closer to stock Android than many other skins.

However, phones like OnePlus 5 and 5T are still running Pie.

Released back in 2017, these phones came with Android Nougat out of the box. OnePlus made a masterstroke by bringing Project Treble support via OTA, which also ensured smoother updates in future.

The global variants of OnePlus 5/5T are currently stuck with October patch on top of Android Pie, but a new update is on the horizon. Tagged as OxygenOS 9.0.10, this build brings the December 2019 security patch with it.

The changelog for this incremental update is as follows:

System

  • Updated Android security patch to 2019.12
  • Improved system stability and general bug fixes

The changelog above is the generic one we often see with these security patches. This means that the update does not bring much in terms of new features. Android 10 is expected to drop in Q2 of 2020, so it could be a preparatory step.

FYI, the Chinese variants of these phones running HydrogenOS received a similar update at the end of last month.

There is no announcement of Android 10 based beta testing yet, but seems that OnePlus is internally cooking something. Features like Digital Wellbeing are confirmed to be part of the OxygenOS 10.x update for OnePlus 5/5T.
