NVIDIA Shield TV Disney+ issues: Dolby Atmos, compatibility, playing 4K content, casting, & more

The NVIDIA Shield TV family recently got a pair of new models to pick up from their 2017 releases, arriving as the Tube and Pro versions. The former is the entry-level model that skimps on a few things like memory and the missing support for 64-bit apps.

By all means, the idea to drop support for 64-bit apps on the Shield TV 2019 is absurd, especially at a time when Google has been pushing developers to ditch 32-bit apps in favor of the better 64-bit architecture.

Lately, NVIDIA has been busy pushing new software updates to address issues in the new Shield TV STBs as well as legacy models. Earlier this month, the former got a ‘Match Content Color Space’ hotfix and improvements to Dolby conversion and the latter got some HD audio improvements.

NVIDIA has also acknowledged the freezing issue that occurs while writing to external HDD on the 2019 Shield TVs, promising to address it via a software update. There are also reports of Kodi crashing playback on these same units.

More recently, users of the BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub on various Shield TV STBs also reported that they were missing the apps from the Play Store, for some reason.

As it stands, there are even more NVIDIA Shield TV issues popping up related to Disney+ and we are going to shed some light on them in this post. In fact, most, if not all of these issues are known to NVIDIA.

Disney+ is now available on the google play store SHIELD TV. Watch Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, or National Geographic in amazing 4K HDR and even Dolby Vision (requires new SHIELD TV).

In the above official statement announcing the availability of Disney+ on the Shield TV, NVIDIA has also revealed a list of known issues that will be fixed in the future as shared below.

Known issues

•  App may not be available on rooted SHIELDs or if you have taken a hotfix release. We are working on this fix right now.
• Dolby Atmos coming soon.
• Casting Disney+ on SHIELD available in HD only
• Unable to play 4K content unless HDR or Dolby Vision is also enabled
• If you are part of the Google Play Services BETA, the Disney+ app may not install on your Android devices. You will need to leave the BETA program from the URL below. If the app still cannot be installed, you may also need to clear the data/cache for the Google Play Store app.
