NVIDIA is rolling out a new software update to the Shield TV 2019 as the second hotfix, tagging along a bunch of bug fixes and performance optimizations.
The shiniest Shield TVs have encountered a myriad of issues since arriving on the scene a few weeks ago. With this second hotfix update, NVIDIA took its time to address a number of these bugs.
For instance, Disney+ subscribers who couldn’t install the app from the Google Play Store can now do so after this update.
Cases of TV settings crashing when changing languages are now gone and so has the Google certification issue where the Shield wouldn’t start Google TV launcher when the Home button is pressed on a 3rd-party launcher.
Despite addressing several annoying issues, there was no mention of a fix for the BBC iPlayer bug that came to light earlier this month. This is despite the fact that the company did acknowledge the NVIDIA Shield BBC iPlayer bug is indeed out there.
Google deployed a change that caused this and they have now reverted the change but it could take up to 24 hours to propagate.
Apparently, the NVIDIA Shield BBC iPlayer bug is being caused by a change that Google recently deployed to the Play Services, meaning it has nothing to do with the app.
Google supposedly reverted this change and it was supposed to take effect over a week ago, but more reports are still coming in with cases of the same NVIDIA Shield BBC iPlayer bug.
Anybody been having issues with BBC iplayer on the last week or two? It disappeared from the quick access menu and now needs to be enabled from the store every time I want to use it. Today its crashing every time I get into the app. Anybody else having any issues or know how to fix it?

As you wait for the permanent fix to arrive, there is a workaround to address this issue. All you need is to turn off location status and boom, the BBC iPlayer app should be up and running on your Shield TV.
Google bug with location service. if you go into settings, device preferences, location, and turn off location status, iplayer should come back. If after that, it is crashing, please file a feedback via settings, device preferences, about, send feedback to nvidia, and for description put “reddit Alexkidd85 iplayer crashing”.

As noted, Google has already deployed a fix for this issue, but it’s likely available in beta and has yet to hit the stable channel. Do let us know if you are still experiencing the issue or the above workaround fixed it.
