Switching between multiple remote controls for your TV, streaming box, or probably a gaming console isn’t an easy undertaking. But in 2019, you don’t need to juggle multiple remotes when there is HDMI-HEC, an HDMI feature that has been around for over a decade.

Using the HDMI-CEC feature, streaming boxes such as the NVIDIA Shield can control your TV’s power (on/off), input, and volume thus rendering the extra remotes redundant.

Matter of fact, HDMI-CEC is the easiest way to control the NVIDIA Shield TV using your TV’s remote control. However, multiple owners of the Shield 2019 units, both the standard “Tube” and Pro model, are reportedly experiencing issues using this feature.

Affected Shield TV 2019 owners are flocking various platforms to air their grievances regarding this matter and below are some of their sentiments.

If CEC – TV on with Shield remote is enabled, the TV will randomly turn on and I can’t explain why. If I disable CEC – TV on, it works as expected. I’d like to have it enabled, as currently the only reason I have the TV remote out is to turn on the TV. I’m not touching the shield remote or accessing it via my network. What is causing the TV to wake like this? Shield 2019 pro, LG B7 OLED, and LG soundbar.

HDMI CEC Not forcing Shield TV to sleep when TV powers down. I have an issue on all 4 of my new shield tvs (2019 tube versions) where FuboTV and youtube will continue to stream when I press the power button on the remote…I have ALL CEC options enabled and CEC is also enabled on my TV.

Just got my 2019 Shield tube version and HDMI CEC is not working correctly. TV turns on when I wake up the Shield but will not turn off but leave an ugly “no signal” screen and I have to use TV remote to turn it off. I had Firestick 4K before this and it worked perfectly all the time.

More related cases have also popped up in the official NVIDIA forums and Reddit suggesting that this is a widespread issue.

NVIDIA suggests that affected Shield 2019 owners check Settings -> DP -> About – Status – Uptime (click on uptime) after things wake next time to see what could be causing the issue.

One affected Shield TV 2019 owner says they uninstalled the Shield app from their Android phone and the issue seems to have disappeared.

I uninstalled the shield app from my android phone and it didn’t happen last night. Maybe that was it.
