Nokia’s is a fairytale story. The Finnish phone maker used to rule the mobile kingdom in the noughties. However, with the dawn of the smartphone era, the company made a few questionable decisions (going for Windows Phone instead of Android) and basically fell from grace.
However, Nokia’s case was not sealed. Under the management of HMD Global, the company is back.
Nokia phones are part of the Android One project. This is a program by Google that seeks to unify the Android experience. Google undoubtedly knows a thing or two about software. Leaving everything to do with Android and updates to Google and focusing on hardware was probably a good decision.
And that is paying off. Android 10 has been out since September and while many OEMs are struggling to test their heavily skinned forks of the new operating system, Nokia 8.1 already received the stable version of Android 10.
This puts Nokia at the bleeding edge of software updates. Sticking to that healthy trend, Nokia is rolling out the November Android security patch to the Nokia 4.2.
It is worth noting that the the phone received the October Android security patch update very recently. The September version of the same was also rolled out in mid-September and the trend continues.
According to the changelog, this update does not bring much in terms of features but packs the new security patch. The incremental OTA weighs in at a rather small 75 MB.
Also receiving the November Android security patch is the Nokia 5.1 Plus. The device was launched back in July 2018 and in my opinion, is one of the most underrated mid-tier Nokia devices we have today.
Sure, it does not spot the best internals but for Android One, it is more than enough. The phone is powered by a MediaTek Helio P60 SoC and comes with 3/4/6 GB of RAM and 32/64 GB of storage.
Just like the Nokia 4.2, the changelog for this update is pretty generic for a monthly security patch update.
