Nokia 3.1 C August security update arrives on Cricket Wireless

In a little over a week, Google will begin rolling out October 2019 Android security patches to the Pixels. Devices from HMD Global, as usual, will be among the first to receive this update all hail to Android One.

This is what Android One gives you – regular software updates, major and minor, released on a timely basis. Back in early 2018, Nokia, just to remind you, promised to release all of its future Android smartphones (excluding Android Go) running Android One in order to deliver on timely updates.

And true to it, the vendor is doing an impeccable job that has earned it a crown at the top of a Counterpoint Research ranking top-performing smartphone vendors as far as software updates are concerned.

Despite every effort that HMD Global is putting forward to deliver timely software updates, there will always be obstacles like carriers standing in the way. Updates may also reach devices at different times depending on the region, but carriers play a huge role.

For instance, those using the non-carrier variant of the Nokia 3.1 started receiving the update to August 2019 security patches late last month. Given that the Nokia 3.1 is an entry-level device, no one is complaining about the timing of the August patch.

However, the carrier effect means that those using the same device on Cricket Wireless, the Nokia 3.1 C, are only receiving this same update as I write this. Sure, the changelog was published a while back, but OTAs usually take time, hence the delay.

Effective 8/20/19, a new software update (00N0_1_39L) will be available for those Nokia 3.1 C customers who have software version 00N0_1_39I or 00N0_1_39K on their phone. This update will provide Google security updates. Cricket will push this software update to customers, prompting them to install the software update to their phone.

As pointed out, the incoming Nokia 3.1 C software update has firmware version 00N0_1_39L and will only be available over the air to those whose 3.1 C units currently have software versions 00N0_1_39I or 00N0_1_39K.

Recently, the Nokia 2.2, Nokia 2.1 and Nokia 3.1 Plus received their updates to the latest September 2019 security patches and we expect the non-carrier variant of the Nokia 3.1 to join the party in the next few days. However, Cricket Wireless users may have to wait until next month to get this patch.

It’s still quite unfortunate that the Nokia 3.1 C will have to wait for weeks before getting the new patch yet the Nokia 2 V on Verizon Wireless already got this patch. But given the gap between the two carriers’ resources, it’s a little understandable coming from Cricket Wireless.
