A few days ago, Nokia joined the likes of Google and OnePlus (?) in confirming and actually extending the software support window for its Android phones. While Google recommends at least two years of software support, the Pixels are guaranteed three years of Android OS and security updates.

OnePlus upgraded the OnePlus 3 and 3T to Android 9 Pie, the third major OS update for the duo since their launch with Marshmallow preinstalled. The story will repeat itself with the OnePlus 5 and 5T confirmed to receive their third major OS upgrade in Android Q.

For those wondering, rest assured: Android Q will also make its way to the OnePlus 5 and 5T. Just remember, there are no ETAs.

Even though Android One also guarantees at least three years of Android security updates, this hasn’t been the case for the few Android One devices I’ve used in the past.

In fact, it’s only until the likes of Xiaomi, Motorola and now Nokia came on board that things started shaping up. Not long ago, we bumped into claims that Xiaomi Mi A1 could be in line to receive a third Android OS upgrade to Android Q, which could be a welcome idea for sure.

Now that Nokia has also confirmed its first-generation Android phones will continue receiving security updates for the third year, it makes the Android One program even more interesting. Unfortunately, the original Nokia 2 isn’t covered, meaning the device’s support window ends this year.

As we approach this inevitable end, you’ll be glad to know that a new software update is available for the said Nokia 2. Arriving with build number 00WW_1_15R_SP05, the update weighs 62.3MB and installs the latest August 2019 security patch.

Even though the changelog only mentions the August security patch, it seems the update also improves performance speeds compared to the previous July update, although it’s not quite clear from the commenter.

Yeah just got it now btw I notice some speed in the phone than the July SP maybe I should check if this SP flawed or not.

FYI, the incoming update has been reported on the Nokia 2 running Android 8.1 Oreo. Interestingly, Nokia gave users the option to either upgrade to Android Oreo and live with a few buggy performances here and there or stick to Nougat and enjoy better performance.

According to the company, the Nokia 2 doesn’t have capable hardware required to get the best performance out of Android Oreo. By giving users choice, HMD did the best thing possible for owners of this device.

In receiving the latest August 2019 security update, the Nokia 2 now joins a bunch of other Nokia devices that have also received the update in the recent past, namely Nokia 7.1, Nokia 7 Plus, and Nokia 8.1; Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 9; and the soon to be replaced Nokia 6.1.

Update 1 (August 30)

After Nokia 2 & Nokia 2.2, now Nokia 2.1 is also receiving the August security update with build number V1.13F, sized 170 MB.

A techy. Besides phones, I also enjoy the farm, music, football, and, of course, food.
