In the world of Android, only a handful of OEMs backport new features from current gen phones to older and legacy devices. Sometimes the reason behind not doing so boils down to hardware limitations, but it’s all about maintaining the exclusivity of the recent most product.

Samsung recently started to bring the Call & Message Continuity feature to older Galaxy phones and tablets

Huawei/Honor is also known for updating their old phones with new age techs, such as Extendable Read-Only File System aka EROFS. As a matter of fact, OnePlus already ported a bunch of utilities from the OnePlus 7 series to OnePlus 5/5T and 6/6T.

Back in May this year, the Shenzhen based OEM announced to do the backporting job. DC Dimming, a hot word nowadays, should also make its way from OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro to older OnePlus phones in a phased manner due to the technical complexities.

In one of our previous articles, we discussed about DC Dimming in details. The new method is now adopted by plenty of Android smartphone makers to reduce the flickering on AMOLED display panels.

Now OnePlus 6/6T owners can also taste the wonderful yet experimental feature on their phones, as OnePlus is rolling out the functionality as a part of a new set of Open Beta builds for the phone duo.

Manu J. of OnePlus has already published the update (Open Beta 23 for OnePlus 6 & Open Beta 15 for OnePlus 6T) announcement thread alongside the complete changelog. Readers can find it as follows:

System

– General bug fixes and stability improvements

Screen Recorder

– Hide floating widget while recording

– More options added for resolution, fps and bit rate

OnePlus Laboratory

– Brand new UI design

– Added DC dimming feature

Weather

– Added popular cities for search suggestions

While an upgraded Screen Recorder app with more options or the inclusion of popular cities in the Weather app are indeed some nice additions, the DC Dimming is the showstopper one here.

It is worth mentioning that the feature is available via OnePlus Laboratory, thus not much stable yet.
