When Motorola was a Google possession, they were literally knocking the socks off the competition in terms of software updates. Those were the days of Nexus flagships. And, sometimes Motorola phones got updated faster than Nexus.
In 2014, Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility. And, Google halted their Nexus series after a year. Launched in September 2015, LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P marked the end of the lineup. In the next year, Google started releasing smartphones independently (Pixel).
Motorola, on the other hand took a steep downward curve in the matter of firmware updates with Lenovo at the helm. And, they shifted their focus to innovative hardware implications like Moto Mods. Needless to say, the upheavals didn’t take off quite well!
It is only through over the air updates can the users get access to new features. For the same reason, they crave for OTAs every now and then (especially when new Android iteration goes out). That’s why brands (even Motorola) releases firmware updates.
Let’s ask you a question! What Android version are you using? If you ask this to a Moto Z2 Play user, exasperation is going to emanate from their answers. Why? Because they didn’t receive Android Pie even a year after it officially went live.
That’s about to change now! Motorola realised it’s not a wise move to delay the update this time as Android 10 started buzzing around. Moreover, they already promised 9.0 Pie overhaul for Z2 Play four months ago.
At this moment, the update started popping up in Brazil. In case you live in the country and you haven’t seen the notification yet, go to Settings>> System updates. You’ll see there if anything is available.
So, what’s new? As you can guess, the new OTA brings with it almost all the features of Android Pie. Owing to the OS upgrade, you will have to download a sizeable file. Better connect to a stable wireless network for flawless installation.
Are you not residing in Brazil? Well, expect the wide rollout in the upcoming weeks! But, you can’t get the official stable build if you use a custom ROM (Android Pie is already available via custom ROMs for Z2 Play).
