[Rolling out] Mi 9 & Redmi K20 Pro Android Q update to soon arrive as part of MIUI beta

Smartphone enthusiasts can dig up tons of interesting info from pre-release alpha or beta build of software updates, and we do have some recent experiences with that. Companies often recruit public volunteers as well, which is a handy way to conduct mass pilot testing before actual rollout.

Besides Pocophone F1, there are a handful of devices from the Chinese OEM that are having the test of Android Q as the form of public beta. Mi 9 and Mi MIX 3 5G got the opportunity first, and Redmi K20 Pro was added in the list immediately after official release.

Xiaomi did publish a tentative list of Android Q based MIUI rollout for their product portfolio, but we are now able to locate yet another compelling information in this regard. As a matter of fact, the news is actually originated from the MIUI China beta announcement thread.

FYI, the regular public beta of MIUI is longer available for global users. Xiaomi, however, decided to continue publishing Chinese beta builds. The latest beta aka MIUI 9.7.25, which was compiled yesterday, came with the following statements:

The automated translation from Chinese to English is slightly rusty, but it apparently says that Mi 9 internal beta users should expect a special migration build based on MIUI 9.7.22 for Android Q soon.

Similarly, Redmi K20 Pro should shift to Android Q in near future and they might close down the Pie based MIUI beta builds on and after 9.7.11.

Apart from the exciting news about Android Q, this week’s MIUI beta is pettry much generic. The regular Redmi K20 gets July security patch, while the Pro variant s blessed with a new camera mode. There are some minor fixes as well; the full changelog is as follows:

System

– Optimize background application memory usage, improve system fluency (Mi 8)

– Update Google security patch (2019#7), improve system security (Redmi K20)

Lock screen, status bar, notification Bar

– Fix the problem that the one-way flow card shows the wrong name in the shortcut switch

– Fix the problem that the wireless network shortcut switch is not clickable (Mi MIX 3)

Camera

– New system camera’s shot mode (Redmi K20 Pro)

System

– Adding a cross-Android version upgrade, the third-party application compatibility prompts

I like to draw the attention of our readers to the last point. This is another indication that MIUI devs are preparing for major version updates, as there will be prompts about third party apps with probable compatibility factors.

As always, the Android Q update will hit the Chinese Mi 9 and Redmi K20 Pro units in the initial phase before wider rollout. We are monitoring the scenario, so expect prompt coverage from us in this context.

As anticipated, the Android Q based semi-internal MIUI beta update is now available for both Mi 9 and Redmi K20 Pro in China.
