The backup feature of Google Photos seems to be bothering iPhone users. Google’s product forum and Reddit reveals that the app is not backing up automatically on Apple’s phones. Even the expert suggestions fail to help.

The issue was reported to Google as an obvious bug. on May 5, 2017, an expert on the official Google Photos forum said

“a number of users have had the same or similar problems; the issue has been escalated to an expert users group on this forum and then reported to Google as a bug”

He further added on June 9, 2017 that,

“The bug has been reported. Presumably they are working on it”

There is no acknowledgement from the company till date. The problem was first reported last year, but a quick look at the comments in the thread reveals that it is still to be fixed. We have also tested the use-case on iPhone 6s unit, and we observed the same problem.
