New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
The Android 10 master race is on, as a number of phones are getting the brand new version of Android via stable (or beta) channel besides Google Pixel lineup. Essential Phone is obviously in the list, and Samsung also surprised us by boosting the pace of their development.
When it comes to heavier skins, Xiaomi delivered the first Android 10 MIUI stable update for Redmi K20 Pro in China. Huawei, on the other hand, promised to bring EMUI 10 (which is obviously built on top of the tenth iteration of Android) to a number of devices.
Magic UI, a direct fork of EMUI, can be found in a handful of Honor branded phones. Rest assured, Huawei will not abandon them. They officially assured to roll out Android 10 update for compatible Honor devices in near future.
I must appreciate their keenness, as Huawei has already initiated the first public beta testing of Android 10 based EMUI 10 software update for two of their flagships: Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. FYI, these Kirin 980 powered phones were launched with EMUI 9.1 out of the box.
The Chinese OEM incorporated numerous cutting edge techs, such as DC Dimming, AR measurement via ToF sensor, dedicated Moon mode in camera etc., on these phones. I would say the arrival of Android 10 on the phone duo is not a big surprise.
At this moment, Huawei restricts the pilot testing to Chinese P30 (model number ELE-AL00 and ELE-TL00) and P30 Pro (model number VOG-AL00, VOG-AL10 and VOG-TL00) units. Interested users must update to the latest August security patch (software version 9.1.103) before enrolling for the beta test.
A rough translation from Chinese reveals that they are planning to allow up to 500 volunteers for the log (?) branch, while the number is 1500 for the non-log one. The registration window starts from today (September 5) and will be open till September 11.
These the current limitations of the EMUI 10 beta build:
1. After the upgrade, the banking apps may not work correctly.
2. The night scene mode on front camera is not supported in this build.
3. Dark mode on some apps might be inconsistent.
4. Existing EMUI 9.1 themes may cause compatibility issues.
You need approximately 6 GB of free space for downloading the OTA package and performing the installation. If you are rooted, you are advised to restore the stock boot image to avoid errors.
For further information, take a look at the announcement thread. Hopefully Huawei will soon expand the program for global users, but we don’t have a proper time frame at this moment.
