Besides Google, Huawei is perhaps the best OEM in terms of updating their legacy phones. The in-house Kirin SoC is indeed helpful for them to provide continuous software updates. However, there are some important changes in the update policy of Huawei/Honor phones from now on.

Yes, you read that right – no more timely OTA for your favorite phone! The following phones are now part of the quarterly security update schedule:

HUAWEI P series: P 9 lite mini, P Smart

HUAWEI Y series: Y9 2019, Y9 2018, Y6 2019, Y6 2018, Y5 2019, Y5 2018, Y5 Prime 2018, Y5 Lite, Y5 Lite 2018, Y3 2018

HONOR series: Honor View20, Honor 10, Honor 10i, Honor 10 Lite, Honor Play, Honor 8A, Honor 8X, Honor 8S, Honor 7S

HUAWEI nova series: nova 4, nova 3, nova 3i, nova 2i

However, the following Huawei/Honor phones are unaffected for now and will continue to receive regular monthly security patches:

HUAWEI P series: P30 Pro, P30, P30 lite, P20 Pro, P20, P20 lite, P Smart 2019

HUAWEI Mate series: Mate 20 X, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20, Mate 20 RS, Mate 10 Pro, Mate 10, PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate RS, Mate 20 Lite, Mate 10 Lite

HONOR series: Honor 10, Honor View10, Honor 9N, Honor 9i, Honor 9 Lite, Honor 7X

HUAWEI nova series: nova 3e, nova Lite 3, nova 2i

The Chinese OEM claims that these lists are subject to change. We can also see some common names under both sections, which really makes no sense.

2018’s Honor Play can be seen under the list of eligible devices to get quarterly security updates. As a matter of interest, the phone got May security patch in the middle of June, and the June update is currently rolling out for the device.

Looks like the new policy will be effective from this month’s (July) security patch, so Honor Play users still have a chance to enjoy timely updates. However, this tiny (less than 250 MB) incremental OTA does not bring Widevine L1 or EMUI 9.1 to Indian units.
