Huawei has already captured Apple’s market share in their home country. And if you talk about their global presence, a recent report by Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service revealed the company’s share in global smartphone market touched its highest ever level of 17% in the first quarter.
Considering the Chinese OEM has their largest user base in China, all updates on Huawei/Honor phones are first pushed to the Chinese variants followed by the global ones. Moreover, Google’s absence in the region is an added benefit which accelerates the update process.
Just a few days back, we reported Huawei’s sub-brand Honor phones namely Honor View 20 and Honor Magic 2 – that are shipped with Magic UI, a fork of Huawei’s Emotion UI (EMUI) – have started receiving Magic UI 2.1 public beta update in China.
The public beta update bumped the bulid number on Honor View 20 to 9.1.0.201/201 and on Honor Magic 2 to 9.1.0.200.
Here’s what the common change log stated:
- [Smart Video]Intelligent extraction of essence clips, automatic matching of special effects templates, one-click production of more exciting MV.
- [GPU Turbo 3.0]Huawei GPU Turbo 3.0 graphics processing acceleration technology has added dozens of games to bring more experience to more games.
- [ PC connection]After the mobile phone establishes a connection with Huawei Matebook, it can realize the connection between the equipment, such as scrapbooking and screen sharing.
- [Streamlined Settings ]Streamline some redundant and complicated settings to provide you with a more concise, easy-to-understand and easy-to-operate setup.
And now, a few days later, it’s coming to light that Honor Magic 2 is getting another update that changes the bulid number from 9.1.0.200 to 9.1.0.206. Here’s a user shared image of the change log:
Just to refresh, powered by HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset, Honor Magic 2 was launched in 2018. The phone shipped with Android 9.0 (Pie), EMUI 9 or Magic UI 2 out of the box. With a 16MP camera, the device features a triple camera lens setup on the back.
Coming back to the update, as per the change log (translated form Chinese), the update appears to be a minor one that brings in May security patch along optimizing the fingerprint icon’s display. Here’s what the short and crisp change log says:
- 【display】
Optimize the display of the fingerprint icon when the screen is off - 【Safety】
Join Google’s May 2019 security patch to enhance mobile phone system security.
Even reports from users who have received this update convey Huawei has fixed the issue related to fingerprint display on Honor Magic 2. Here’s what a user said (translated from Chinese):
a new version has fixed a screen-out fingerprint display, compared with other mobile phones really… published yesterday
Oh and not to miss, as is usually the case, the May update on Honor Magic 2 that’s currently rolling out is for beta users in China. Though the update should not delete data, users are still cautioned to perform a backup before installing the update.
Regarding the global roll out, Honor Magic 2 users may expect to receive to update on their phones sometime in late-May or early-June. Not to miss, it is possible to cross-flash the Chinese updates, but that’s not recommended for everyone.
