The Google app is definitely the most active Google-owned application on my smartphone. Whether I want to search for on-device content. Check. Search messages on my device. Check. What about contacts? Check. And Gmail? Check. A quick search for something online? Check.
But according to Android Police, the Google app may be undergoing some drastic changes that will see the app stripped off some of these functions, more so the personal results that have made it so useful for me and many others.
In what is a strange bug, the Google app is now crashing when you try to bring up message-related results. The issue was first discovered by Redditor u/jayeshdb when searching message-related queries.
Searched “What is iMessage” on Google app and it crashed.. on both my Phone and my Father’s phone.
While the original poster talks about iMessage-related queries, the Google app still crashes when searching for message-related queries as well. It’s quite a strange phenomenon that seems to affect the latest Google app beta version 10.89.9.
We have also been able to replicate it using various variations of the message-related queries such as “my messages”, “what are my messages”, “what is message”, “where is imessage” or even or “what is messag” with the same results, so it’s a pretty widespread issue.
Looking at the hundreds of comments below the original Reddit post, indeed, the issue is affecting most people on various Android phones.
We will keep an eye on the developments and let you know if and when the bug is addressed. Meanwhile, you might want to roll back to the stable version if this is a grave issue for you. The APK is here.
